Information Regarding the Required Installation of
Smoke Alarms in Sleeping Areas in Existing Apartments

  • In 2004 the Florida Fire Prevention Code began requiring electrically operated smoke detectors be installed outside of every bedroom in existing residential buildings of 3 units or more.

  • The current edition of the code now requires that a smoke detector also be installed inside each bedroom for these same structures. Buildings with fire sprinklers are exempt.

  • To ease the financial burden on owners, the code allows for a detector powered by a nonchargeable, non-replaceable, 10 year battery to be used inside each bedroom instead of the expense of installing electrical detectors.

  • Detectors should be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Beginning in January 2016 and throughout the year, Fire Department inspectors will be sending courtesy notices to owners of affected buildings and unit owners.

  • With that courtesy notice, you will receive an Affidavit of Compliance. Simply fill out the form, have it notarized and return the original by mail: or in person to the Fire Department at 2801 Coral Springs Drive • Coral Springs, Florida 33065.

  • You are more than twice as likely to die in a home fire without a working smoke alarm.

  • To reduce and slow the spread of fire, it is recommended that you sleep with your bedroom door shut.

  • A closed bedroom door will reduce the level of smoke detector sound by 20 decibels. That’s roughly the difference between the levels of a hair dryer versus the level of normal human conversation.

  • You have no sense of smell when you sleep so you will not detect smoke.
