WOOD STORK (Mycteria americana)

The wood stork is the largest North American wading bird. It can grow to be three feet tall with a wingspan of five feet. The adults have a dark, bare head and a long yellow, beak.

Wood storks feed by wading through shallow wetlands with their beaks in the water. When their open beak touches a fish, frog or snake it quickly snaps shut.

The Wood Stork has been on the endangered species list since 1984.
