Two different species of milkweed can be found at Sandy Ridge. Aside from having bright showy flowers the Milkweed plays an essential role in the development of a number of butterfly species.
Female Monarch Butterflies lay their eggs exclusively on the leaves of the Milkweed. After hatching, the caterpillar feeds off of the leaves ingesting a toxin. This toxin protects both the caterpillar and the adult from predation by birds. |
