SCARLET MILKWEED (Asclepias curassavica)

Two different species of milkweed can be found at Sandy Ridge. Aside from having bright showy flowers the Milkweed plays an essential role in the development of a number of butterfly species.

Female Monarch Butterflies lay their eggs exclusively on the leaves of the Milkweed. After hatching, the caterpillar feeds off of the leaves ingesting a toxin. This toxin protects both the caterpillar and the adult from predation by birds.
