GREAT HORNED OWL (Bubo virginianus)

The Great Horned Owl is a nocturnal predator at Sandy Ridge. Their large eyes are extremely acute and their hearing allows them to target minute rustling sounds in the dark.

Due to very soft and fringed feathers the flight of the owl is nearly silent.

Owls feed primarily on small rodents and reptiles such as mice or lizards.

If a roosting Great Horned Owl is discovered by Blue Jays or crows during the daytime they will circle it calling for hours. This behavior is known as mobbing.
