GREAT EGRET (Ardea alba)

This large wading bird (over 3 feet tall with a wingspan of over 4 feet) is a patient hunter. It can be seen around lakes and wetlands stealthily stalking fish, frogs and other small aquatic animals.

During breeding season it develops long, lacy plumes on its back. These plumes were at one time used as decorations for ladies hats and led to a drastic population decrease during the early 1900’s.

Today pollution and habitat destruction are the greatest dangers faced by the Great Egret.
