ANHINGA (Anhinga anhinga)

The Anhinga is frequently seen swimming in lakes and canals with only its neck and head sticking out of the water. For this reason the Anhinga is also known as the “snakebird.”

When not in the water this bird can often be seen sitting on a tree or along the shore with its wings spread to dry. This is necessary because the Anhinga does not have special oil glands that “waterproof” its feathers.
